Does Acupuncture Help Sports Injuries?

Acupuncture for sports injuries works by releasing trigger points, reducing inflammation, improving circulation to injured tissue, and calming the nervous system patterns that slow recovery. When integrated within Orthopedic Acupuncture, treatment goes beyond the symptomatic tissue to identify the mechanical load patterns driving the injury. Most athletes notice meaningful improvement within the first few sessions, with lasting results building over a short structured series.

We Work With Athletes at Every Level

If you are dealing with a sports injury, recurring overuse pattern, or muscle tension that is limiting training or competition, Acupuncture can address the structural and neuromuscular factors driving the problem.
At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, we work with athletes at every level, from competitive high school and collegiate athletes to lifelong recreational runners, climbers, cyclists, and weekend hikers. Treatment is guided by what is found in your body, not a generic protocol.
WHY PATIENTS CHOOSE US

Why Patients Choose Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture

Assessment Before Treatment

Every session begins with structural assessment. We identify what is driving the injury before any needles are placed, so treatment addresses the actual source, not just where it hurts.

The Full Kinetic Chain

Sports injuries rarely start where the pain is. We evaluate movement patterns, load distribution, and compensatory mechanics throughout the body to find the primary driver.

A Specific Treatment Sequence

Chad’s approach follows a consistent order: immune and organ assessment first, nervous system second, structural work third. That sequence is what makes the structural work more effective and more lasting.

Results Without Overtreatment

We tell you how many sessions to expect from the start. Acute injuries often resolve in three visits. We do not keep athletes coming indefinitely, and we are direct about progress at every stage.

What Is Sports Acupuncture?

Sports Acupuncture is an approach to athletic injury and performance care that combines Orthopedic Acupuncture, Japanese Acupuncture techniques, Dry Needling, and structural assessment to treat the full range of musculoskeletal problems athletes encounter.
Rather than treating the site of pain in isolation, Sports Acupuncture evaluates movement mechanics, load distribution, and compensatory patterns to identify why a muscle or joint became overloaded in the first place. Treatment addresses both the immediate injury and the structural contributors that increase risk of recurrence.
Common symptoms we treat:
  • Hamstring, quadriceps, and calf muscle strains
  • IT band syndrome and runner’s knee
  • Rotator cuff strain and shoulder impingement
  • Plantar fasciitis and Achilles tendonitis
  • Hip flexor tightness and groin strain
  • Shin splints and tibial stress reactions
  • Ankle sprains and chronic ankle instability
  • Tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow
  • Low back pain from athletic loading
  • Sciatica and piriformis syndrome in runners
  • Meniscus-related knee pain from twisting and pivoting
  • Neck and upper back tension from cycling or desk-based training
  • Overuse injuries from repetitive athletic patterns
  • Performance-limiting tension that does not resolve with stretching or rest

How Our Sports Acupuncture Approach Is Different

Most sports injury care addresses the painful site directly. Stretched muscles get stretched. Injured tendons get supported. Tight areas get released. This approach works for some injuries, but for recurring or complex presentations it often misses why the tissue became vulnerable in the first place.

In our clinic, treatment begins with structural assessment. We evaluate movement patterns, joint mechanics, fascial tension, and neuromuscular firing before any needles are placed. We identify what is primary and what is compensatory. Then we treat the full pattern, not just the symptom.

Dry Needling is integrated within Orthopedic Acupuncture sessions when trigger points are contributing to restricted movement, joint compression, or nerve irritation. Japanese Acupuncture techniques settle the nervous system and improve the body’s capacity to heal before structural work begins. The result is treatment that is both more precise and more lasting.

The treatment

How Sports Acupuncture Works Within Orthopedic Acupuncture

Before any needle is placed, we identify the structural and movement patterns contributing to the injury. Sports Acupuncture is applied as part of that broader plan, not as a standalone protocol.
1

Releases Trigger Points and Myofascial Restriction

Athletic overuse and injury create tight bands of muscle tissue and trigger points that restrict movement and alter load distribution. Dry Needling Trigger Point Therapy produces a local twitch response that resets muscle fibers and reduces referred pain patterns throughout the kinetic chain.
2

Resets Neuromuscular Firing Patterns

Overloaded or injured muscles develop inhibited and dysfunctional firing patterns that persist long after tissue damage has healed. Acupuncture helps interrupt these patterns, allowing the nervous system to restore more normal recruitment and coordination.
3

Reduces Inflammation and Supports Tissue Repair

Needling increases local blood flow, delivering oxygen and nutrients to injured tissue while supporting the body’s natural inflammatory resolution process. This accelerates tissue repair and reduces the chronic low-grade inflammation common in overuse injuries.
4

Settles the Nervous System for Faster Recovery

Athletic training and competition place sustained demand on the nervous system. Japanese Acupuncture calms sympathetic activation and supports parasympathetic recovery states, improving sleep quality, reducing systemic tension, and creating conditions where tissue repair is more efficient.

WHY TREATMENT ORDER MATTERS
Chad’s treatment sequence is always the same: immune and organ assessment first, nervous system regulation second, structural and orthopedic work third. He never goes straight to the muscles. By the time Dry Needling is applied, the nervous system is already settled and individual muscle fibers within a tight area are more accessible. This layered approach is what separates this work from trigger point release alone.

Athletes and Active Adults We Work With

Runners and Trail Athletes

IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendon issues, shin splints, and hip and glute overuse patterns. Western North Carolina’s trail running community is one of our most consistent patient populations.

Cyclists and Triathletes

Hip flexor tightness, IT band tension, lower back strain, and knee pain from repetitive pedaling mechanics. We work with road cyclists, mountain bikers, and triathlon athletes managing training volume.

Climbers and Bouldering Athletes

Finger flexor tendonitis, elbow strain including lateral and medial epicondylitis, shoulder impingement, and grip-related tension. Climbing injuries often involve the entire upper extremity chain.

Basketball, Football, and Soccer Players

Acute and chronic soft tissue injury, hamstring and quadriceps strain, ankle instability, and knee pain from contact and cutting mechanics. We work with competitive high school and collegiate athletes in these sports.

Dancers and Gymnasts

Muscle imbalances, hyperflexibility-related instability, ankle and foot injuries, hip impingement, and performance-limiting tension patterns. Movement-based athletes often present with complex bilateral compensation.

Active Adults and Weekend Athletes

Pickleball elbow, hiking-related knee pain, gardening strain, and overuse injuries from recreational activity. You do not need to be a competitive athlete to benefit from Sports Acupuncture.

INJURY PREVENTION AND PERFORMANCE SUPPORT
Treatment does not have to wait for injury. Many athletes use Acupuncture proactively during high training volume periods to manage tissue load, improve recovery quality, and reduce the risk of acute injury. Treatment is guided by what is found in the body at each session, so it adapts to where you are in your training cycle.

Combining Sports Acupuncture with Clinical Massage Therapy

Many athletes choose to combine Acupuncture with Clinical Massage Therapy for deeper muscular recovery and more comprehensive soft tissue support. Massage Therapy can improve tissue texture, reduce guarding, and support integration of structural changes between Acupuncture sessions.

Acupuncture and Clinical Massage Therapy are provided by separate licensed practitioners within our clinic, allowing coordinated care while maintaining clarity of treatment roles. Scheduling both services in the same visit or on consecutive days is straightforward.

Clinical Depth That’s Genuinely Rare

Chad Johnson, MS, L.Ac.

Clinic Director · Licensed Acupuncturist · Orthopedic Specialist
Focused on identifying and treating the source of muscle pain and trigger points.

Chad’s work is shaped by over 20 years of direct clinical experience, 17 years of advanced training in Japanese Acupuncture, including direct study with Kiiko Matsumoto as well as direct training in Japan . His approach combines precise palpation, orthopedic assessment, and targeted needling to identify and treat the structures driving pain. He is the only practitioner in Asheville and Greater Western North Carolina working in this tradition.

Before becoming an acupuncturist, Chad trained in Massage Therapy and spent years working in a range of Western and Eastern modalities including Shiatsu and Tui Na. That foundation, combined with decades of anatomical study, supports a level of precision patients often notice early in care.

This depth of training allows for a more specific, results-oriented approach, especially in cases that have not fully responded to other treatments. Patients often notice a difference in how quickly and specifically their pain is addressed.

If I could leave 12-15 Five Star Reviews I would. My first session with Chad was to help mend my tennis elbow in a holistic and swift way – I felt immediate improvement from the first session and after another 2-3 sessions I’ve felt a longterm and stable improvement (my pickleball game is finally back!). I continue to return every few weeks due to the incredible results that occur IMMEDIATELY. From achilles tenderness to shoulder and back pain, it feels like a magic that Chad imbues when he’s able to tap into his holistic understanding of the body and find ways to trigger immediate relief. Grateful for the thoughtful, grounded, highly professional and holistic healing that happens here. If you’re experiencing recurring aches or pains and would prefer to enjoy living without those things, book a session.

It is always an amazing experience to work with Chad. He is the only person I know in my life that has such a deep knowledge of the human body. Chad healed my right shoulder, which was in a really precarious situation, I couldn’t lift weights or do any upper body training. After 3 sessions with Chad, I was back to full on mode and I keep going.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Sports Acupuncture

Can Acupuncture help sports injuries?
Yes. Acupuncture for sports injuries works through multiple mechanisms: trigger point release, neuromuscular reset, reduced inflammation, improved circulation, and nervous system regulation. When integrated within Orthopedic Acupuncture, it is guided by structural assessment and addresses the load patterns driving the injury, not just the symptomatic tissue. It is effective for acute injuries, overuse patterns, and recovery support between training cycles.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Yes. Whether it is a hamstring pull that is taking too long to heal, a shoulder that flares every season, or a knee that has been an issue since you started running more miles, Acupuncture targets the tissue directly while the broader Orthopedic work helps figure out why it keeps happening.

How many sessions will I need for a sports injury?
Acute injuries that came on recently may respond within three sessions. Chronic overuse patterns or long-standing compensation injuries generally require a short structured series. We typically begin with three sessions for recent issues and five for chronic or complex presentations, then reassess based on how the body is responding. We are committed to getting you better in as few treatments as possible.

IN PLAIN TERMS
If the injury is recent, you may feel better in two or three visits. If it has been a recurring issue for months or seasons, plan for a short series of five and then check in. We do not keep athletes coming indefinitely.

Is Sports Acupuncture the same as Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is one technique within Sports Acupuncture. It targets myofascial trigger points specifically, releasing tight muscle tissue and resetting neuromuscular firing. Sports Acupuncture is a broader framework that includes structural assessment, Japanese Acupuncture, Dry Needling, and nervous system regulation applied in a specific treatment sequence. In Chad’s approach, Dry Needling is never applied in isolation. He addresses the immune and organ systems first, then settles the nervous system, and only then works with the muscles directly. By the time trigger point work begins, the tissue has already shifted.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Dry Needling is one tool we use. Sports Acupuncture is the full treatment, which means assessing the whole structural picture, settling your nervous system, and then releasing the specific tissues involved. Same needles, much more context.

Can Acupuncture be used during a training season, or only for injuries?
Acupuncture can be used effectively during active training periods as both injury management and preventive support. For athletes in high training volume phases, regular Acupuncture helps manage tissue load, improve recovery quality between sessions, regulate the nervous system, and reduce the cumulative strain that often precedes injury. Treatment is guided by what is found in the body at each session, so it adapts to where you are in your training cycle.

IN PLAIN TERMS
You do not have to be injured to benefit. A lot of athletes come in during heavy training blocks to stay ahead of the load, recover faster, and keep small things from becoming big things.

Does Sports Acupuncture work for chronic overuse injuries?
Yes. Overuse injuries often persist because the underlying load patterns have not been addressed, not because the tissue itself is beyond recovery. Chronic tendinopathies, long-standing IT band issues, and recurring muscle strains typically involve both local tissue changes and compensatory patterns in adjacent structures. Orthopedic Acupuncture evaluates the full kinetic chain and treats the primary drivers, which is why it often helps athletes who have tried rest, stretching, and physical therapy without lasting resolution.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Chronic overuse injuries are frustrating because the usual approach, rest and stretching, does not fix why the tissue keeps getting overloaded. We look at the whole movement picture to figure out what is actually driving the problem.

What sports do you treat at Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture?
We work with athletes across a wide range of sports and activity levels including running, trail running, cycling, triathlon, climbing, basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, volleyball, tennis, pickleball, swimming, dance, gymnastics, and weightlifting. We also treat recreational athletes and active adults managing injuries from hiking, paddling, yoga, and everyday physical activity.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Most sports and most activity levels. If you are moving and something is not working right, we can take a look.
