20+ Years Clinical Experience
Serving Asheville & all of WNC
We excel at pain relief. Most patients feel a physical change during their very first treatment.

Acupuncture That Addresses What Is Actually Causing Your Pain

Most people who find us have already tried something else. Physical therapy, chiropractic care, massage, rest. The pain keeps returning. At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, we use Orthopedic and Japanese Acupuncture to identify the structural and neuromuscular patterns driving your condition and treat at the source.

We are regional specialists in pain relief, injury recovery, and complex conditions that have not fully resolved elsewhere. We are the only clinic in Western North Carolina and East Tennessee working in the advanced Japanese Acupuncture tradition of Kiiko Matsumoto, a living master trained directly in Japan.

OUR APPROACH

Orthopedic Acupuncture with a Gentle Japanese Approach

Our approach is built on precise assessment and targeted treatment.
Orthopedic Acupuncture integrates functional movement testing, palpation of the involved structures, and treatment based on what is found in the body. We use gentle Acupuncture techniques rooted in Japanese Acupuncture, along with gentle warming moxibustion when circulation support and tissue recovery are appropriate.

Treatments are well tolerated, even for patients who are sensitive or hesitant about Acupuncture. When needles are used, we work with the thinnest Japanese needles, as fine as a hair follicle. We work with care and intention.

This approach is often effective for cases that have not fully responded to other treatments.

WHO WE TREAT

We Specialize in Cases That Have Not Resolved Elsewhere

Many of our patients arrive after months or years of working through other options. Physical therapy, chiropractic care, injections, rest. What they share is pain that has not fully resolved and a need for a different clinical perspective.

We also see acute injuries, sports-related strain, and patients who simply want precise, assessment-driven care from the start.

Desk workers with chronic low back tightness and postural strain

Active adults managing pain and recurring flare-ups from hiking, trail running, climbing, cycling, pickle ball, training, or overuse

Athletes with sports injuries, overuse conditions, and performance-limiting pain

Acute injuries from lifting, twisting, or sudden strain

Pain that radiates into the hips, glutes, legs, or into the limbs or refers to areas away from the source

Stiffness and limited mobility that worsens with sitting or inactivity

Complex or unclear diagnoses that have not responded to conventional care

Last hope. When you feel that you have no options left, Chinese Medicine can offer you a different perspective on your health. Often times, this difference equates to a better quality of life for you.

Long-standing back pain that has not fully responded to other care

Auto-immune conditions, post-viral complications, Arthritis, tendonitis

Pre and post surgical support –eases pain and speeds recovery times

GI symptoms, immune system, skin (Psoriasis, hives, post Shingles symptoms, etc)

Clinical Depth That’s Genuinely Rare

Chad Johnson, MS, L.Ac.

Clinic Director · Licensed Acupuncturist · Orthopedic Specialist

Chad’s work is shaped by over 20 years of direct clinical experience, 17 years of advanced training in Japanese Acupuncture including direct study with Kiiko Matsumoto, and direct training in Japan. His approach combines precise palpation, orthopedic assessment, and targeted needling to identify and treat the structures driving pain. He is the only practitioner in Asheville and Greater Western North Carolina working in this tradition.

Before becoming an acupuncturist, Chad trained in Massage Therapy and spent years working in a range of Western and Eastern modalities including Shiatsu and Tui Na. That foundation, combined with decades of anatomical study, supports a level of precision patients often notice early in care.
This depth of training allows for a more specific, results-oriented approach, especially in cases that have not fully responded to other treatments.

What Patients Are Saying

Patients often mention the level of attention, explanation, and results they experience in care.
Had my first appointment today and couldn’t be happier. I’ve seen many doctors for chronic pain and Chad actually listens and cares. He has brought hope back into my life. After one appointment I already had relief. Such a calming atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Chad is a miracle worker. I came to Chad with severe pain in my neck as well as ringing in my ears. Within a few sessions my neck felt great and the ringing subsided. I appreciate Chad’s thoroughness, professionalism, and all around good nature. I am so grateful for his work

★★★★★

Excellent experience with very good results for a first treatment from this highly recommended Acupuncturist. One of the very best Acupuncturist’s I have ever experienced over 40 years of having this procedure done. ‘Combo’ acupressure and acupuncture produced an amazing result on my debilitating back pain. I am looking forward to getting a few more visits from Chad Johnson, for even better results that can eliminate back surgery.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions about Orthopedic Acupuncture

Does Acupuncture actually work for pain?
Acupuncture is well-supported for musculoskeletal pain in research and clinical practice. Orthopedic Acupuncture specifically targets the muscles, joints, and nerve pathways involved in your condition rather than applying a standard protocol. Most patients notice improvement within the first few sessions.
How many sessions will I need?
This depends on how long the condition has been present and which structures are involved. Acute issues often respond quickly, sometimes within two to four sessions. Chronic or complex patterns typically require a longer course, with meaningful progress usually visible within the first four to six visits.
What is the difference between Acupuncture and Dry needling?
Both use thin filament needles, but the training, framework, and clinical application differ significantly. Acupuncture is practiced by licensed acupuncturists with graduate-level training in diagnosis and treatment. Orthopedic Acupuncture integrates both the diagnostic depth of Acupuncture Physical Medicine and the structural precision associated with dry needling.
Does BCBS cover Acupuncture in North Carolina?

Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina covers Acupuncture for some plans, particularly for Low Back Pain. Coverage varies by plan type and employer contract. We provide a superbill for reimbursement if you have coverage. You can read more about insurance coverage on our BCBS page.

I have tried physical therapy and it did not help. Can Acupuncture help?
This is one of the most common presentations at Moxa House. Many patients arrive after physical therapy, chiropractic care, or injections have not produced lasting results. Orthopedic Acupuncture addresses the neuromuscular and fascial components of pain that other approaches sometimes do not fully reach.
Is the treatment gentle?
Yes. We use the finest Japanese needles available, as fine as a hair follicle. Many patients who arrive nervous about needles are surprised by how comfortable treatment feels. Techniques can always be adjusted based on individual sensitivity.
