Does Acupuncture Help with Migraines?

Yes. Acupuncture is one of the most studied complementary approaches for Migraine prevention and Headache relief. Research and extensive clinical experience support its use for reducing Migraine frequency, shortening episode duration, and decreasing pain intensity. In our clinic, treatment addresses the structural, neurological, and systemic patterns driving headache recurrence rather than providing symptomatic relief alone. Many patients who have not found lasting results with medication alone notice significant improvement within a focused course of care.

What Causes Migraines and Chronic Headaches?

Migraines are complex neurological events with multiple contributing patterns. Effective treatment depends on identifying which factors are most active in your case.
Common contributors include:
  • Cervical tension and structural restriction in the neck, upper back, and cranial base
  • Trigger points in the suboccipital, trapezius, and sternocleidomastoid muscles
  • Nervous system hypersensitivity and dysregulation
  • Hormonal fluctuation, particularly in menstrual-related migraines
  • Liver and digestive system dysfunction (East Asian Medicine lens)
  • Sleep disruption, stress load, and adrenal fatigue patterns
  • Vascular and circulatory irregularities
  • Jaw tension and TMJ involvement
Identifying the primary drivers in your case determines the course of treatment. No two migraine presentations are identical.

The treatment

How Acupuncture Addresses Migraines at the Source

Treatment begins with a structural and systemic assessment. Cervical mobility, cranial base tension, and fascial patterns are evaluated. Organ and nervous system function is assessed using Japanese Acupuncture palpation methods. This determines the treatment sequence before any needles are placed.
1

Releases Structural Tension in the Neck and Cranial Base

Cervical restriction and trigger points in the upper back and neck are among the most common structural contributors to migraine. Acupuncture releases myofascial tension in the suboccipital muscles, scalenes, and trapezius, reducing the mechanical triggers that initiate headache cycles.
2

Regulates the Nervous System

Migraines involve a sensitized nervous system that responds to triggers with an amplified pain response. Japanese Acupuncture helps shift the nervous system into a parasympathetic state, reducing overall reactivity. Over a course of treatment, this can lower baseline sensitivity and decrease the frequency and intensity of episodes.
3

Supports Liver and Digestive Function

In East Asian Medicine, the Liver system plays a central role in migraine pathology. Liver Qi stagnation is a primary pattern in migraine, particularly in menstrual-related cases, stress-triggered headaches, and migraines associated with digestive irregularity. Treatment addresses the underlying systemic imbalance, not just the pain signal.
4

Improves Circulation and Reduces Vascular Irregularity

Acupuncture improves circulation to the head, neck, and cranial structures, addressing the vascular component of migraine. Moxibustion may be incorporated when warming and circulation support are indicated.

TREATMENT LAYERS AND SEQUENCE
Chad’s approach always follows a specific sequence: immune and organ assessment first, nervous system second, structural and muscular work third. He never goes straight to the structural level. By the time local cervical and cranial work begins, the broader system has already been addressed. That sequence is what makes the structural work more effective and more lasting.

Acupuncture for Migraines in Asheville: Who We Treat

We see a wide range of Migraine and Headache presentations. What patients share is that standard approaches have not provided reliable, lasting relief.

Chronic Migraine sufferers with frequent episodes that interfere with work and daily life

Menstrual Migraine and hormonal headache patterns

Tension headaches and cervicogenic headaches originating in the neck

Migraines with aura, visual disturbance, or neurological symptoms

Post-concussion Headaches and lingering head pain after injury

Cluster Headaches and other complex Headache patterns that have not responded to medication

If Migraines or Headaches are a recurring part of your life, the common thread is usually an undertreated pattern, not an untreatable condition. Most patients who arrive here have already tried the standard approaches. What we offer is a different level of assessment..

If Headaches & Migraines are making it hard to work, sleep, or get through your day — that is exactly what we are here for.

Combining Acupuncture with Clinical Massage Therapy for Headache Relief

Many patients benefit from combining Acupuncture with Clinical Massage Therapy. Craniosacral Therapy, Deep Tissue work targeting the cervical and cranial musculature, and Myofascial Release can support structural changes and reduce tension between Acupuncture sessions.

Massage Therapy and Acupuncture are provided by separate licensed practitioners within our clinic. Our Clinical Massage Therapist offers Craniosacral Therapy at an advanced level, which is particularly well suited to migraine and headache care.

What to Expect at During Treatment

01

Understand Your Pattern

We review the history of your migraines, including frequency, triggers, associated symptoms, and what has and has not worked. This is followed by a structural assessment of the cervical spine, cranial base, and upper body.
02

Identify the Contributors

Japanese Acupuncture palpation methods are used to assess the organ and nervous system patterns involved. Structural and fascial findings are integrated with systemic patterns to determine the treatment sequence.
03

Treat with Precision

Treatment follows a specific sequence. You will know what is being addressed and why before needles are placed. Most patients notice a shift in tension and nervous system state during the session itself.
After a session, some patients notice mild fatigue or temporary soreness. Many report reduced head and neck tension within 24 to 48 hours. Frequency and severity of migraines typically decrease over a short structured series.

Clinical Depth That’s Genuinely Rare

Chad Johnson, MS, L.Ac.

Clinic Director · Licensed Acupuncturist · Orthopedic Specialist
Focused on identifying and treating the source of muscle pain and trigger points.

Chad brings over 20 years of hands-on clinical experience to every session, including 14 years of Orthopedic Acupuncture practice in Asheville and 17 years of continuous advanced training under Kiiko Matsumoto, a living master in Japanese Acupuncture. He is the only practitioner in Asheville and Greater Western North Carolina working directly in this tradition.

Before becoming an acupuncturist, Chad trained in Massage Therapy and spent years working across both Western and Eastern modalities.

That anatomical foundation, combined with his advanced training in palpation-based diagnosis and Japanese Acupuncture, gives him a precise, layered approach to migraine care that addresses the structural, neurological, and systemic contributors simultaneously.

What Patients Are Saying

Patients often mention the level of detail, explanation, and results they experience in care.

I have suffered from migraines for most of my life. As a pharmacist I educated myself on my options and have tried most medication, dietary restriction, and sleep management strategy in the literature. Some of these approaches helped for a period of time, but they always seemed to lose effectiveness eventually. I started with weekly visits to Chad Johnson and IMMEDIATELY noticed a reduction in my migraine frequency. It was life changing! My migraine frequency went from 3-4 per week to an average of once per month. I also recently started experiencing severe elbow tendinitis. After weeks of anti-inflammatory medications and PT exercises I mentioned it to Chad. What a difference in my level of pain and discomfort after he treated my tendinitis in one appointment.

I went to see Chad to treat symptoms of post-concussion syndrome — mostly neurological symptoms — head pain, dizziness, light and sound sensitivity. Not only have these symptoms lessened over time, but Chad was able to help with other issues, too. He does wonders in treating pain.

I’ve walked into the office with back and neck pain, and out completely pain free. I’ve walked in with a persistent headache, and out pain free. Chad seems to have an unquenchable thirst for learning, especially as it relates to acupuncture, and living in a healthy, holistic way. He is generous with his knowledge, so you can maintain gains between sessions. I highly recommend him.

Recently I suffered from near-constant severe headaches for four months straight. I saw six doctors, including a neurologist, had multiple tests and scans, and was prescribed a plethora of prescription meds. Nothing seemed to help. Thankfully I made an appointment with Chad and after my first visit, my worst type of headache completely went away. After two more visits, my lesser headaches had completely stopped as well. Chad has really helped restore my quality of life and I would highly recommend him for anyone suffering with chronic headaches.

For so much of my life I had suffered from tension Headaches and Migraines. I always thought it would just be a part of my life and never thought there was anything that I could do about it. I learned about Chad from my husband, who had benefited immensely from Acupuncture treatments with his chronic knee tendonitis. I was hesitant but was experiencing so many Headaches, sometimes three a week, that I was desperate for help. My first meeting with Chad was eye-opening. He was kind, thorough and made many connections between my headaches, my posture, my career and my past injuries. I left there feeling empowered and hopeful. After five treatments with Chad I was astounded by the benefits. Not only did I stop experiencing weekly headaches but after almost a year of my first treatment, I am thrilled to say that I almost never get headaches now. I feel like Chad was able to relieve tension that I had been carrying around in my neck and shoulders since I was a teenager. I cannot express my gratitude for him and his practice. I never thought my Headaches were something I could change, I had accepted them as something to live with and suffer through. Now, almost a year later, my day to day life is completely different. I no longer have to suffer through weekly headaches or migraines and I am better equipped to deal with tension and stress. I only wish I had tried this sooner!

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Migraines and Headaches

Can Acupuncture prevent Migraines?
Acupuncture is widely used for migraine prevention, and research supports its role in reducing frequency. In our clinic, treatment addresses the systemic and structural patterns that predispose the nervous system to migraine. Over a course of care, many patients see a meaningful reduction in how often migraines occur, not just in how severe they are when they do.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Yes, prevention is actually where Acupuncture tends to shine the most for migraines. It is not just about helping when one is happening. A short course of treatment can shift how often they come and how intense they are when they do.

How many treatments will I need for Migraines?
For chronic migraine, we recommend starting with five treatments and reassessing based on how the pattern responds. Most patients notice meaningful change within that window. For acute or episodic headache patterns, three treatments is a reasonable starting point. We do not keep patients coming indefinitely. The goal is the fewest treatments needed to produce lasting change.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Plan for five sessions to start if migraines are a regular occurrence for you. That gives us enough time to evaluate your pattern and see real change. We check in and adjust from there. Three sessions can be enough for people whose headaches are less frequent.

Does Acupuncture help Menstrual Migraines?
Menstrual and hormonal migraines respond well to Acupuncture. In East Asian Medicine, this pattern is understood as Liver Qi stagnation with Blood deficiency, and treatment addresses the hormonal and systemic regulation involved. Treatment timing relative to the cycle may be adjusted to maximize impact during the premenstrual phase when intervention is most effective.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Hormonal migraines are one of the patterns that Acupuncture addresses particularly well. The timing of treatment relative to your cycle matters, and we take that into account. Many patients see a significant reduction in both the migraines themselves and in PMS-related symptoms alongside them.

Is Acupuncture safe to use alongside Migraine Medication?
Yes. Acupuncture does not interfere with medications used for migraine prevention or acute treatment. Many patients use both concurrently. As migraines become less frequent and severe, some patients work with their physician to reduce medication over time. We do not advise on medication changes, but we are happy to coordinate care with your prescribing provider.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Acupuncture and your migraine medications work fine together. There is no interference. Many patients do both, and over time, as migraines become less frequent, some work with their doctors to reduce medication. That is between you and your doctor.

What is the difference between Acupuncture and Craniosacral Therapy for Migraines?
Acupuncture works through needle stimulation of specific points to regulate the nervous system, release structural tension, and address systemic imbalance. Craniosacral Therapy uses gentle touch to work with the craniosacral system, the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. Both can be effective for migraines, and they address complementary layers of the problem. In our clinic, both modalities are available, and they can be scheduled together or in sequence.

IN PLAIN TERMS
Both approaches work for migraines and target different things. Acupuncture uses needles and works on the whole system. Craniosacral is very light hands-on work focused on the skull and spine. We have both here. Some patients do one, some do both.

Does Acupuncture hurt? I am nervous about needles.
We use the thinnest Japanese Acupuncture needles available, as fine as a single hair. Most patients who are hesitant about needles are surprised by how little they feel. Chad reads needle sensitivity as a clinical tool, adjusting technique based on individual response. The experience is generally calm, quiet, and deeply relaxing for most patients.

IN PLAIN TERMS
The needles we use are about the width of a hair. Most people who come in nervous about needles leave wondering what they were nervous about. Chad pays close attention to how your body responds and adjusts as he goes.
