Acupuncture for Sciatica in Asheville, NC
Can Acupucture Help with Sciatica?
Sciatic nerve pain is one of the most disruptive conditions we treat. The radiating pattern into the hip, glute, or leg often worsens with sitting, disrupts sleep, and resists the standard approaches most people try first. At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, we use Orthopedic and Japanese Acupuncture to identify the structural source of sciatic irritation and address it directly. Rather than managing symptoms, we evaluate what is actually driving the nerve compression or irritation and build treatment around that.

Understanding your Sciatica pain
Struggling With Sciatica Pain?
Sciatica can feel sharp, radiating, or relentless — often traveling from the low back into the hip, glute, or down the leg. Many people in Asheville come to us when nerve pain has started interfering with walking, sitting, driving, training, or sleep.
Sciatic pain is often connected to disc irritation or herniation, piriformis tension, lumbar joint dysfunction, SI joint instability, or fascial restriction along the posterior chain. Knowing which of these is driving your symptoms is what makes treatment effective.
- Pain radiating down one leg
- Numbness or tingling
- Weakness in the leg
- Disrupted sleep from nerve pain
- Burning or electric sensations
- Gluteal and hip pain
- Difficulty walking or sitting
- Muscle tightness or spasms
How Acupuncture Helps Relieve Sciatica
At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, we use advanced Orthopedic and Japanese Acupuncture techniques to evaluate the structural and neuromuscular contributors to Sciatica pain, rather than simply managing symptoms.
Your treatment is guided by a functional assessment first. Chad identifies which structures are actively involved in your pain pattern before any needles are placed. This means treatment is specific to your presentation, not a generalized Sciatica pain protocol.
Reduces Muscular Compression Around the Nerve
Targeted needling releases tight muscles and trigger points that compress or irritate the sciatic nerve along its path through the hip, glute, and leg.
Calms Nervous System Hypersensitivity
Japanese Acupuncture techniques work to quiet an overactive pain response, reducing the intensity and frequency of nerve flare-ups over time.
Improves Circulation & Reduces Inflammation
Better blood flow to irritated tissues supports healing and helps reduce the inflammatory process that keeps nerve pain cycling.
Addresses the Root Structural Pattern
Using advanced palpation, Massage Therapy and Tuina, Japanese KMS style, Applied Channel Theory, and Chinese Medicine principles, we identify the underlying structural imbalance, not just where it hurts.
Dry needling integration: Where trigger points are contributing to low back, dry needling techniques may be incorporated within the Orthopedic Acupuncture session, guided by structural assessment rather than applied as a standalone protocol.
Orthopedic Acupuncture with a Gentle Japanese Approach
Our approach is built on precise assessment and targeted treatment for Sciatica pain.
Orthopedic Acupuncture integrates functional movement testing, palpation of the involved structures, and treatment based on what is found in the body. Treatment focuses on the specific muscles, joints, and nerve pathways contributing to your pain.
We use gentle Acupuncture techniques rooted in Japanese Acupuncture, along with gentle warming moxibustion to support circulation and tissue recovery. Treatments are well tolerated, even for patients who are sensitive or hesitant about Acupuncture. When needles are used, we work with the thinnest Japanese needles, as fine as a hair follicle. We work with care and intention.
This allows for more specific treatment and often supports faster improvement in pain and mobility.
This approach is often effective for cases that have not fully resolved with other treatments.
Sciatica Doesn’t Discriminate. We Treat It at the Source.
We see Sciatica across a wide range of people. What they share is nerve pain that’s limiting their life — and a need for care that goes deeper than symptom management.
● Desk workers with chronic low back and hip tightness
● Trail runners and cyclists dealing with glute and leg pain
● Strength athletes managing disc-related sciatica
● People in physical labor with long-standing compensation patterns
● Anyone who can’t sleep, sit, or walk comfortably from nerve pain
● Patients whose sciatica keeps returning despite previous treatment
Sciatica involving disc irritation: If your Sciatica is connected to disc involvement, acupuncture can help reduce surrounding muscular guarding and inflammation while supporting your mobility through the recovery process. We work alongside your existing medical care as appropriate.
If nerve pain is making it hard to walk, sit, sleep, or train — that’s exactly what we’re here for.
Clinical Depth That’s Genuinely Rare
Chad Johnson, MS, L.Ac.
Clinic Director · Licensed Acupuncturist · Orthopedic Specialist
Focused on identifying and treating the source of low back pain.
Chad’s work is shaped by over 20 years of direct clinical experience, 17 years of advanced training in Japanese Acupuncture, including direct study with Kiiko Matsumoto as well as direct training in Japan . His approach combines precise palpation, orthopedic assessment, and targeted needling to identify and treat the structures driving pain. He is the only practitioner in Asheville and Greater Western North Carolina working in this tradition.
Before becoming an acupuncturist, Chad trained in massage therapy and spent years working in a range of Western and Eastern modalities including Shiatsu and Tui Na. That foundation, combined with decades of anatomical study, supports a level of precision patients often notice early in care.
This depth of training allows for a more specific, results-oriented approach, especially in cases that have not fully responded to other treatments. Patients often notice a difference in how quickly and specifically their pain is addressed.

After one surgery and three procedures, my doctor said the next step would be pain management. I had lived with back and leg pain for 2 1/2 years and his advice was devastating. Then, I had three sessions with Dr. Johnson and the pain is gone. I no longer limp and am able to continue my 30-year T’ai Chi practice, which I thought I would have to give up. Dr. Johnson worked nothing short of a miracle for me. I will be ever grateful.

The clinic has a wonderful calm zen energy and Chad is a master healer. His mindful approach to client care and skillful treatments provide soothing, highly effective, immediate results. I appreciate that Chad explains the simple yet elegant methods of acupuncture as he works on the affected areas, so you know what he is doing. The sharp sciatic pain I had been experiencing for a week, which was beginning to radiate up my spine and down my legs and feet, eased considerably during the first treatment and disappeared with the following treatment, much to my relief and delight.
