Can Acupucture Help with Low Back Pain?

Acupuncture is an effective approach for low back pain, addressing the muscle tension, nerve irritation, and structural imbalances that drive most cases. Orthopedic acupuncture targets the specific tissues contributing to pain rather than applying a general protocol. Many patients report meaningful relief within the first few sessions, with longer-lasting results building over a course of treatment.

The treatment

Why Acupuncture addresses Low Back Pain at the source

At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, we use advanced Orthopedic and Japanese Acupuncture techniques to evaluate the structural and neuromuscular contributors to low back pain, rather than simply managing symptoms.

Your treatment is guided by a functional assessment first. Chad identifies which structures are actively involved in your pain pattern before any needles are placed. This means treatment is specific to your presentation, not a generalized back pain protocol.

1

Relieves Muscle Tension and Pressure

Treatment helps identify and release tight muscles and trigger points that place stress on the low back and irritate nearby nerves.
2

Calms an Overactive Pain Response

Japanese Acupuncture helps settle the nervous system, reducing sensitivity so pain becomes less intense and less frequent.
3

Restores Healthy Movement in the Tissues

Acupuncture helps free up restricted fascia and soft tissue so the low back can move with less strain and better support.
4

Improves Circulation and Supports Healing

Increased blood flow delivers oxygen and nutrients to the area, helping reduce inflammation and support tissue repair.

Dry needling integration: Where trigger points are contributing to low back, dry needling techniques may be incorporated within the orthopedic acupuncture session — guided by structural assessment rather than applied as a standalone protocol.

We work differently

Orthopedic Acupuncture with a Gentle Japanese Approach

Our approach is built on precise assessment and targeted treatment for low back pain.

Orthopedic Acupuncture integrates functional movement testing, palpation of the involved structures, and treatment based on what is found in the body. Treatment focuses on the specific muscles, joints, and nerve pathways contributing to your pain.

We use gentle Acupuncture techniques rooted in Japanese Acupuncture, along with gentle warming moxibustion to support circulation and tissue recovery. Treatments are well tolerated, even for patients who are sensitive or hesitant about Acupuncture. When needles are used, we work with the thinnest Japanese needles,  as fine as a hair follicle. We work with care  and intention.

This allows for more specific treatment and often supports faster improvement in pain and mobility.

This approach is often effective for cases that have not fully resolved with other treatments.

The treatment

Low Back Pain Doesn’t Discriminate. We Treat It at the Source.

We see low back pain across a wide range of people. What they share is restriction, irritation, or instability that is limiting movement and not resolving on its own.
Desk workers with chronic low back tightness and postural strain

Active adults with recurring flare-ups from lifting, training, or overuse

Long-standing back pain that has not fully responded to other care

Acute low back pain from bending, twisting, or sudden injury

Pain that radiates into the hips, glutes, or legs

Stiffness and limited mobility that worsens with sitting or inactivity

Low back pain involving muscle guarding and joint restriction: When the body protects an irritated area, surrounding muscles tighten and movement becomes limited. Acupuncture helps reduce this protective tension, improve circulation, and support more normal movement patterns as healing progresses.

If low back pain is making it hard to bend, sit, stand, or move comfortably,
this is exactly what we’re here for.

Clinical Depth That’s Genuinely Rare

Chad Johnson, MS, L.Ac.

Clinic Director · Licensed Acupuncturist · Orthopedic Specialist
Focused on identifying and treating the source of low back pain.

Chad’s work is shaped by over 20 years of direct clinical experience, 17 years of advanced training in Japanese Acupuncture, including direct study with Kiiko Matsumoto as well as direct training in Japan . His approach combines precise palpation, orthopedic assessment, and targeted needling to identify and treat the structures driving pain. He is the only practitioner in Asheville and Greater Western North Carolina working in this tradition.

Before becoming an acupuncturist, Chad trained in massage therapy and spent years working in a range of Western and Eastern modalities including Shiatsu and Tui Na. That foundation, combined with decades of anatomical study, supports a level of precision patients often notice early in care.

This depth of training allows for a more specific, results-oriented approach, especially in cases that have not fully responded to other treatments. Patients often notice a difference in how quickly and specifically their pain is addressed.

What Patients Are Saying

Patients often mention the level of detail, explanation, and results they experience in care.

I came to Chad for treatment of chronic low back pain. He listens carefully and then explains exactly what he is doing and why. His knowledge of Japanese Acupuncture is extensive. He will demonstrate exercises to do at home if needed. A session with Chad is relaxing and calming. I leave in less pain and feeling better all over.

★★★★★

I’ve had lower back pain for over a year several doctors had looked at me MRI’s and a number of CT’s with no relief. I had a total of four sessions and with each one I started feeling so much better. With every session Chad explains what he’s doing and why he’s doing it and I only felt the needles twice during the four sessions. Chad gave me relief not only in my lower back but in other parts of my body that I was having problems with. I would recommend acupuncture done by Chad to anybody who’s having health problems.

Excellent experience with very good results for a first treatment from this highly recommended Acupuncturist. One of the very best Acupuncturist’s I have ever experienced over 40 years of having this procedure done. ‘Combo’ acupressure and acupuncture produced an amazing result on my debilitating back pain. I am looking forward to getting a few more visits from Chad Johnson, for even better results that can eliminate back surgery.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Low Back Pain

How many acupuncture sessions does it take for low back pain?
This varies depending on how long the pain has been present and what structures are involved. Acute low back pain often responds quickly, sometimes within two to four sessions. Chronic or complex cases typically require a longer course of treatment, with meaningful progress usually visible within the first four to six visits.
Does BCBS cover acupuncture for back pain in North Carolina?
Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina does cover acupuncture for some plans, particularly for low back pain. Coverage varies by plan type and employer contract. We provide a superbill to apply for reimbursement if you have coverage. You can read more about insurance here.
What is the difference between acupuncture and dry needling for low back pain?
Both use thin filament needles, but the training, framework, and application differ significantly. Acupuncture is practiced by licensed acupuncturists with graduate-level training in diagnosis and treatment. Dry needling is typically a short-course add-on practiced by physical therapists or chiropractors. Orthopedic acupuncture integrates both the diagnostic depth of Acupuncture Physical Medicine and the structural precision often associated with dry needling.
Is acupuncture safe for herniated disc or sciatica?
Yes, when performed by a licensed and experienced practitioner. Chad works with herniated disc, sciatica, and nerve-related back pain regularly. Treatment is adjusted to your specific presentation, and a physical assessment is conducted before needles are placed. If imaging or additional evaluation is needed, that will be discussed at your intake.
Can acupuncture help low back pain that has not responded to physical therapy?
This is one of the most common presentations at Moxa House. Many patients arrive after physical therapy, chiropractic care, or injections have not produced lasting results. Orthopedic acupuncture addresses the neuromuscular and fascial components of pain that other approaches sometimes do not fully reach.
