Does Dry Needling Work for Muscle Pain?

Dry needling is an effective technique for releasing trigger points, reducing referred pain, and restoring normal neuromuscular firing in overloaded muscle tissue. When integrated within orthopedic acupuncture, it addresses not just the tight muscle but the structural patterns causing it to become overloaded in the first place. Most patients notice meaningful improvement within the first few sessions.

Struggling With Muscle Pain or Trigger Points?

If you are searching for dry needling in Asheville, you are likely dealing with muscle pain, sports injury, or tension that has not resolved with stretching, rest, or other treatments alone. At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, dry needling techniques are integrated within orthopedic acupuncture sessions to address trigger points, fascial restrictions, and neuromuscular dysfunction. Rather than treating isolated muscle knots alone, we evaluate the structural and movement patterns contributing to pain.
Common symptoms we treat:
  • Chronic upper and lower back muscle tension
  • Neck and shoulder tightness with referred pain
  • Hip and glute restriction contributing to leg pain
  • IT band, calf, and lower leg tightness in runners
  • Tension headaches from suboccipital or cervical muscles
  • Post-injury muscle splinting that has not fully resolved
  • Repetitive strain from desk work or overhead activity
  • Muscle tightness or spasms limiting movement
The treatment

Why Dry Needling Addresses Muscle Pain at the Source

At Asheville Orthopedic Acupuncture | Moxa House, we use orthopedic and Japanese acupuncture techniques to evaluate the structural and neuromuscular contributors to muscle pain, rather than simply treating where it hurts. Your treatment is guided by a functional assessment first. Chad identifies which structures are actively involved before any needles are placed.

1

Releases Trigger Points Directly

The needle reaches the hyperirritable tissue in the muscle, producing a local twitch response that breaks the contraction cycle and allows the muscle to reset to normal resting length.
2

Reduces Referred Pain Patterns

Many trigger points refer pain to areas away from the needle site. Releasing the source point rather than treating where it hurts is what produces lasting change.
3

Restores Normal Neuromuscular Firing

Overloaded muscle tissue develops abnormal firing patterns that perpetuate pain. Dry needling interrupts this cycle and helps the nervous system reset its relationship to the affected area.
4

Addresses the Root Structural Pattern

Integrated within Orthopedic Acupuncture, treatment goes beyond the trigger point to address the movement and structural patterns that caused the muscle to become overloaded in the first place.

Dry Needling vs. Acupuncture: Both use identical thin filament needles, but the training, framework, and application differ significantly. Acupuncture is practiced by licensed acupuncturists with graduate-level training in diagnosis and treatment. Orthopedic Acupuncture integrates both the diagnostic depth of Acupuncture and the structural precision of dry needling — resulting in more thorough treatment than either approach alone.

We work differently

Orthopedic Acupuncture with a Gentle Japanese Approach

Our approach is built on precise assessment and targeted treatment for muscle pain and trigger points.

Orthopedic Acupuncture integrates functional movement testing, palpation of the involved structures, and treatment based on what is found in the body. Treatment focuses on the specific muscles, joints, and nerve pathways contributing to your pain.

We use gentle Acupuncture techniques rooted in Japanese acupuncture, including the thinnest Japanese needles available — as fine as a hair follicle. Treatments are well tolerated, even for patients who are sensitive or new to needling. We work with care and intention.

This allows for more specific treatment and often supports faster improvement in pain and mobility. This approach is effective for cases that have not fully resolved with other treatments, including physical therapy dry needling programs.

The treatment

Muscle Pain and Trigger Points. We Treat Them at the Source.

We see these presentations across a wide range of patients. What they share is restriction, tension, or injury that is limiting movement and not resolving on its own.

Desk workers with chronic upper back and neck tension from postural strain

Trail runners and cyclists with hip, glute, or IT band restriction

Climbers and overhead athletes with shoulder and rotator cuff involvement

Active adults with recurring muscle flare-ups from lifting, training, or overuse

Post-injury muscle splinting that has not fully resolved despite previous care

Patients whose tension keeps returning after physical therapy or chiropractic

Coming from a physical therapy dry needling program? Dry Needling is one component of what acupuncturists have practiced for thousands of years. At Moxa House, trigger point therapy is integrated within a full Orthopedic Acupuncture framework — combining precise needling, channel theory, and structural assessment to address not just the trigger point itself, but the underlying pattern driving it.

If muscle tension or a lingering injury is limiting your activity, this is exactly what we are here for.

Clinical Depth That’s Genuinely Rare

Chad Johnson, MS, L.Ac.

Clinic Director · Licensed Acupuncturist · Orthopedic Specialist
Focused on identifying and treating the source of muscle pain and trigger points.

Chad’s work is shaped by over 20 years of direct clinical experience, 17 years of advanced training in Japanese Acupuncture, including direct study with Kiiko Matsumoto as well as direct training in Japan . His approach combines precise palpation, orthopedic assessment, and targeted needling to identify and treat the structures driving pain. He is the only practitioner in Asheville and Greater Western North Carolina working in this tradition.

Before becoming an acupuncturist, Chad trained in massage therapy and spent years working in a range of Western and Eastern modalities including Shiatsu and Tui Na. That foundation, combined with decades of anatomical study, supports a level of precision patients often notice early in care.

This depth of training allows for a more specific, results-oriented approach, especially in cases that have not fully responded to other treatments. Patients often notice a difference in how quickly and specifically their pain is addressed.

What Patients Are Saying

Patients often mention the level of detail, explanation, and results they experience in care.

TREATMENT: DRY NEEDLING / TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

I’ve had a series of sessions with Chad, originating with a chronic ankle injury. As I got to know Chad and his work, we went well beyond the ankle and worked with many different areas of tension and other areas of pain in my body including my calves, quads, glutes, shoulders, lats, deltoids and more. It is like night and day in how I feel in my body now — so much greater relaxation and ease. Chad knows his stuff so thoroughly and it is such a unique specialty he has cultivated.

TREATMENT: DRY NEEDLING / TRIGGER POINT THERAPY

As someone who is trained in Oriental Medicine, I have a very high standard for care and have experienced treatments from practitioners all across the country. I can say without any hesitation that Chad’s work is in a class of its own and stands among the very best I have ever experienced. His approach is both subtle and incredibly powerful. During my session, I felt months of stubborn knots and deep tension in my hips and back melt away. It was a profound release that other treatments haven’t achieved.

Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions about Dry Needling

Is Dry Needling the same as Acupuncture?
Same needle, different job. Dry Needling goes after the tight spot in a muscle. Acupuncture looks at the whole picture first. Chad does both together, in a specific order, so by the time he gets to your tight muscle it is already starting to release on its own.
Is Dry Needling safe?
Very safe in trained hands. Chad has been doing this for 14 years with thousands of hours of needle training. The needles are sterile, single-use, and as fine as a hair. Most people who are nervous about needles are surprised by how little they feel.
Does Dry Needling hurt?
Sometimes you feel a quick twitch or a dull ache for a moment when a knot releases. Most people describe it as less uncomfortable than they expected. Chad pays close attention to how your body responds and adjusts as he goes.
How many Dry Needling sessions will I need?
If it came on recently, you may feel better in two or three visits. If it has been going on for months or years, plan for a short series of five, then check in. We do not keep people coming indefinitely.
Can Dry Needling help sports injuries?
Yes. Whether it is a hamstring pull, a shoulder that will not recover, or a recurring hip issue that flares every season, Dry Needling targets the muscle tissue directly while the broader Orthopedic work helps figure out why it keeps happening.
Can Dry Needling help sports injuries?
At a PT clinic, Dry Needling is often a 15-minute add-on after a weekend training. Here it is one part of a full Orthopedic session with someone who has spent 14 years needling and over a decade training in advanced Japanese Acupuncture. Same needle, very different depth of practice.
