Modern Research

Acupuncture has been used to treat millions of people for over 3,000 years. Modern science is proving its value through new studies conducted by leading scientists, hospitals, and medical research facilities from around the world. Acupuncture is receiving wide acceptance as a valid, safe and effective form of health care.
5

Neurotransmitter Theory

Acupuncture stimulates secretion of endorphins and enkephalins in the central nervous system influencing immune and pain response.1 2 3

5

Autonomic Nervous System Theory

Acupuncture stimulates the release of norepinephrine, acetylcholine, and opioids normalizing nervous activity and reducing pain. Which, essentially promotes a relaxation response.4 5

5

Vascular Interstitial Theory

Acupuncture affects the electrical system of the body by enhancing closed circuit transport in connective tissue. This facilitates healing by allowing transfer of energy between normal and injured tissues.6

5

Blood Chemistry Theory

Acupuncture improves blood concentrations of triglycerides, cholesterol, and phospholipids, regulating the body toward homeostasis.7

5

Gate Control Theory

Acupuncture activates non-pain receptors that inhibit transmission of pain signals “gating” pain stimuli.8

According to a study published in the Archives of Internal Medicine, 51% of medical doctors understand the efficacy and value of acupuncture, and medical doctors refer patients to acupuncturists more than any other alternative care provider.9

In Canada, a 2008 study conducted by the Institute for Work & Health concluded that low back pain, the most common musculoskeletal problem, can be relieved by acupuncture massage, called Tui Na, more effectively than any other treatment.10

A German study published in Archives of Internal Medicine in 2007 covered the largest and most rigorous trial ever undertaken to investigate the analgesic effects of acupuncture versus traditional medical approaches to relieve lower back pain. This study involved 1,802 patients and 13,475 treatments and concluded that acupuncture “constituted a strong treatment alternative to multimodal conventional therapy, giving physicians a promising and effective treatment option for chronic lower back pain.”11

In addition to its effectiveness in pain control, acupuncture has a proven track record of treating a variety of endocrine, circulatory and systemic conditions.

The British Medical Journal in 2008 reported that acupuncture can increase the success rate of in-vitro fertilization and increase the number of viable pregnancies. The additional benefits were listed as reduction in nausea and muscle pain associated with both IVF and pregnancy in general without the use of drugs that might harm the growing fetus.12

In Sweden, a 2008 study involving 215 cancer patients proved that acupuncture can eliminate the need for additional drugs and reduce nausea suffered during radiation treatments.13

A 2007 study from the University of Heidelberg in Germany concluded that acupuncture treatments can not only relieve the pain associated with bronchial asthma but also help to control outbreaks of allergic asthma as well. It became clearly evident that “acupuncture performed in accordance with the principles of traditional Chinese medicine showed significant immune-modulating effects.”14

“There is sufficient evidence of acupuncture’s value to expand its use into conventional medicine.”

I went to see Chad for a bad ankle sprain but ended up getting more than just recovery from that injury. Not only do I... know that together Chad and I can resolve any potential residual weakness or susceptibility, I am also reminded how much my body craves healing other areas of tension and release. Chad has a very calm presence, focuses deeply on the areas of injury or concern and is comforting in sharing what he is doing and why. I felt confident in his work and supported in competent hands. I know if I ever want to feel better in my body, ease in my spirit and generally relaxed and refreshed, I can just go see Chad.read more

Finding Chad and Nicolle Johnson was perhaps my luckiest day this year. I had hurt my back badly at the very same time... I began suffering with Plantar Fasciitis. Then my allergies kicked in as well as assorted aches and pains. I searched for an acupuncturist on line; intuitively my search led me to a kind and caring conversation with Nicolle who correctly convinced me that Chad was the one I needed to meet. I’ve been seeing Chad for over two months in his peaceful, Zen-like office. With natural kindness and patience, Chad listens intently until his extraordinary ‘chad radar’ turns on. Then, miraculously, he begins to connect pain with source, pain with source. How he does this is not only fascinating, it feels magical. He finds pain that I didn’t know existed and, most often, appears to be at the root of my physical issues. I happily offer my highest recommendation and know that if you come to Chad for healing, you are going to feel better and blessed.read more

Inital appointment 2 months post arthroscopic knee surgery. Could not walk down hill without pain. My goal, as a long... term runner, was to get back on the road. I am now training for a sprint Triathalon and while still slow, there is no pain and I look forward to continuing to improve. Chad knew just what to do, where to put needles and had lots of helpful advice. Grateful.read more

Recently I suffered from near- constant severe headaches for four months straight. I saw six doctors, including a... neurologist, had multiple tests and scans, and was prescribed a plethora of prescription meds. Nothing seemed to help. The headaches were incapacitating and taking a toll on my mental and emotional health. Thankfully I made an appointment with Chad and after my first visit, my worst type of headache completely went away. After two more visits, my lesser (remaining) headaches had completely stopped as well. Chad has really helped restore my quality of life and I would highly recommend him for anyone suffering with chronic headaches.read more
