Can Acupuncture Help with Alpha-Gal Syndrome? Here's What the Research Shows-

Microscopic Needles for Acupuncture for Alpha-Gal

Alpha-Gal Syndrome Is on the Rise — Especially Here. If you live in Western North Carolina, you already know tick exposure is part of life outdoors. What fewer people know is that a single tick bite can trigger alpha-gal syndrome, an acquired allergy to mammalian products including meat and dairy, that can persist for years and significantly affect quality of life.

Alpha-gal syndrome (AGS) is caused by immune sensitization to a carbohydrate found in mammalian tissue. Reactions can range from gastrointestinal symptoms and skin eruptions to, in some cases, anaphylaxis. The reaction typically occurs hours after consuming beef, pork, lamb, or dairy,  making the connection difficult to identify at first.

AGS has been documented across 17 countries. In the United States, it is increasingly prevalent in tick-heavy regions, including the Southeast and Southern Appalachians.

What Western Medicine Currently Offers

Most people diagnosed with alpha-gal syndrome are told the same thing: avoid mammalian products and manage symptoms as they arise. There is currently no widely accepted pharmaceutical treatment for AGS, and most allergists consider it untreatable beyond strict dietary avoidance.

That leaves a significant number of people without a clear path forward, particularly those who have experienced severe reactions or who are struggling with accidental exposures.

What the Research on Auricular Acupuncture Shows

A 2021 peer-reviewed study published in Medical Acupuncture examined auricular acupuncture as a treatment approach for alpha-gal syndrome. The study reviewed outcomes from 137 patients treated across two clinical sites using a specific auricular acupuncture method.

Of the patients with available outcome data, 96% reported remission of their alpha-gal symptoms. No adverse reactions to the treatment were reported. For patients with a prior diagnosis of anaphylaxis, 93% reported no subsequent symptoms from later exposure.

The study authors noted that the treatment itself carries no risk of anaphylaxis — unlike traditional allergy desensitization approaches — because it does not involve direct exposure to the allergen. They concluded that this approach warrants further study in prospective trials.

What Is Auricular Acupuncture?

Auricular acupuncture is a clinical practice in which specific points on the ear are needled to influence body systems and functions. It has been integrated into acupuncture practice since the 1950s and is now used by practitioners worldwide as a complement to or replacement for body acupuncture in certain applications.

The ear contains a mapped set of points that correspond somatotopically to various organs and structures. Stimulating these points with fine acupuncture needles has demonstrated clinical utility across a range of conditions, with an established body of research supporting its use.

It is not a fringe technique. It is a recognized component of acupuncture practice with decades of clinical application behind it.
